Hay Fever & Allergy
Hayfever, also known as allergic rhinitis, is a common condition that causes symptoms such as sneezing, runny or stuffy nose, itchy eyes, and throat irritation. It occurs when the immune system reacts to allergens, such as pollen, dust mites, or pet dander, as if they were harmful invaders.

Hay fever, also known as allergic rhinitis, is an allergic reaction to allergens such as pollen, dust mites, or pet dander. When these allergens enter the body, the immune system overreacts, leading to symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, and itchy eyes.
Management of hay fever symptoms may include avoiding allergens when possible, using over-the-counter or prescription medications, and making lifestyle changes such as keeping windows closed during high pollen seasons
Treatment options for hay fever include:
Antihistamines: These medications block the action of histamine, a substance in the body that triggers allergy symptoms. They can be taken orally as tablets or liquid, or used as nasal sprays or eye drops. Examples include chlorphenamine (Piriton), loratadine (Clarityn), cetirizine (Zyrtec), and fexofenadine (Allevia).
Nasal Corticosteroids: These nasal sprays reduce inflammation in the nasal passages, relieving symptoms like congestion, sneezing, and runny nose. Examples include fluticasone (Flixonase), beclomethasone (Beconase), and mometasone (Nasonex).
Eye Drops: Antihistamine eye drops can relieve itchy, red, and watery eyes caused by hay fever. Examples include sodium cromoglicate (Optrex)
Steroid nasal sprays are medications used to treat hay fever and nasal inflammation. They work by reducing inflammation in the nasal passages, which helps relieve symptoms like congestion, sneezing, and runny nose.
The frequency of use depends on the specific medication prescribed by our prescribing team. In general, steroid nasal sprays are used once or twice daily, as directed.
Common side effects may include nasal irritation, nosebleeds, head ache, and sore throat. These side effects are usually mild and temporary
Some people may experience symptom relief within a few days of starting treatment, while others may require several weeks. Consistent use of the medication as directed is key to achieving optimal results.
