Thrush is caused by an overgrowth of yeast, usually Candida albicans, in the vagina.
Factors such as:
Antibiotic use, hormonal changes and weakened immune system can contribute to thrush.
Common symptoms of thrush include itching, burning, redness, swelling, and abnormal vaginal discharge that may resemble cottage cheese.
Clotrimazole cream should be applied externally to the affected area and around the entrance of the vagina, typically twice daily for about 1-2 weeks, or as directed by our prescribing team.
Thrush symptoms typically improve within a few days of starting treatment, but it's important to complete the full course of medication as prescribed to ensure the infection is fully eradicated.
To help prevent recurrent thrush, practice good hygiene, avoid tight-fitting clothing, wear breathable cotton underwear, and limit the use of antibiotics when possible. Maintaining a balanced diet and managing underlying health conditions such as diabetes can also be beneficial.
While thrush is not considered a sexually transmitted infection, it's possible for partners to transmit the yeast back and forth. If your partner experiences symptoms or you have recurrent thrush, it may be advisable for both partners to undergo treatment to prevent reinfection.
