A bacterial sore throat is caused by certain types of bacteria, such as streptococcus, infecting the throat and causing inflammation and pain.
Symptoms may include severe throat pain, difficulty swallowing, swollen glands, fever, and sometimes white patches on the tonsils or throat.
At Yorkshire Pharmacy Clinic, we offer a strep A test and treatment service for individuals experiencing sore throat symptoms. Upon confirmation of strep A diagnosis, our clinical pharmacy team can provide appropriate antibiotic treatment.
Antibiotics such as clarithromycin and penicillin are commonly prescribed to treat strep A bacterial sore throat infections.
Clarithromycinis an oral antibiotic that works by stopping the growth of bacteria, thereby clearing the infection.
Common side effects may include stomach upset, diarrhoea, nausea, and changes in taste.
Penicillin works by interfering with the bacteria's ability to form cell walls, leading to their destruction.
Penicillin may not be suitable for individuals with allergies to penicillin or related antibiotics.
Antibiotics such as clarithromycin and penicillin typically start to work within a few days of starting treatment. However, it's important to complete the full course of antibiotics as prescribed by our prescribing team to ensure the infection is fully cleared and to prevent recurrence.
