Malaria Prevention
Malaria, a disease transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes, is prevalent in various parts of the world, including Sub-Saharan Africa, South America, and India. Common symptoms of malaria include fever, headache, fatigue, and vomiting, among others. When planning travel to regions with a high risk of malaria transmission, it is important to take preventive measures, including the use of anti-malaria medication.

Malaria is a potentially life-threatening disease caused by parasites transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes. When a mosquito carrying malaria parasites bites a person, the parasites enter the bloodstream and multiply in the liver, eventually infecting red blood cells.
Common symptoms of malaria include fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. In severe cases, malaria can lead to complications such as organ failure, seizures, coma, or death.
The most effective way to prevent malaria is by avoiding mosquito bites. This includes using insect repellent, wearing long-sleeved clothing, and sleeping under mosquito nets. Additionally, antimalarial medications can be prescribed for travellers visiting areas where malaria is endemic.
Malarone is a combination medication containing atovaquone and proguanil. It works by interfering with the growth and reproduction of the malaria parasites in the body, effectively preventing and treating malaria infections.
Common side effects of Malarone may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain, headache, dizziness, or skin rash.
Mefloquine, marketed under the brand name Lariam, is an antimalarial medication that belongs to the class of drugs known as antimalarials. It works by killing the malaria parasites in the bloodstream, preventing the progression of the disease.
Mefloquine (Lariam) may cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, headache, insomnia, vivid dreams, or psychiatric symptoms like anxiety, depression, or hallucinations. Rarely, it may cause more severe side effects such as seizures or cardiac arrhythmias.
Doxycycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that is also used as an antimalarial medication. It works by inhibiting the growth and replication of malaria parasites in the body, effectively preventing and treating malaria infections.
Common side effects of Doxycycline may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach upset, photosensitivity (increased sensitivity to sunlight), or vaginal yeast infections in women. It's essential to take Doxycycline with food to minimise stomach upset.
The choice of antimalarial medication depends on factors such as the destination of travel, the presence of drug-resistant malaria strains, individual medical history, and potential side effects. We can help determine the most suitable antimalarial for your needs and provide specific recommendations based on your travel plans and health status.
